There are times when things may not work out as you wanted it to be. You turn on a gas furnace, and it freaks you out for not working properly, or worse, it does not act normally, worst yet, it does nothing at all or simply won’t run.
Some of these errors may be easy as 123 or may be repaired by a push of a button. These are several things you must bear in mind. First, wear a glove or protection gear while trying some do-it –yourself repairs. Check the fuses and the wires. There might be a blown fuse or a tripped circuit that made your gas furnace defective. If this is the case, either you change the fuse or have a professional technician do the job for you. Wires may be hard to figure out as these are sometime complicated so call a person who can do the job for you.
If you think there is a motor overload, wait awhile then press button again for a reset. If the pilot light is out, try re-lighting. If there is no gas, make sure the valve is open. If you think these errors come from dirty filters, clean or replace the filters. Clogged filters are sometimes reason for the temporary defect.
Check the thermocouple. Adjust the thermocouple nut when there is a need to.
Clear oil ports or have them lubricated. If you see gears, you may also do the same thing to the gears, lubricate them. Dust or soot may have stuck in them so cleaning may as well be given to your furnace. For thermostats that may not have functioned well, try resetting them by turning them off and on again. After a few tries without any result, go try checking other parts you think may not have started well. If you suspect tightened or loosened belts, adjust them to the tightness that is allowed by the belt to move.
When you see dirty burners, get a professional to clean them or replace them. Do not, in any way, do the cleaning if you have no idea how to do it, otherwise it may not be safe. For difficulties, call professional help.
When you smell gas and think that it comes from your gas furnace, don’t panic. Open all the windows, if you have children, get the children to a secure place. Do not try to do the fixing alone, get a technician who can do the job. There can be many ways in fixing a gas furnace but difficulties arise in the course of a do-it-yourself repair. A professional technician can do the job for you as he is the most well-versed when it comes to problems regarding gas furnaces.
In the course of looking for one, try informing the person of the kind of gas furnace you have. May it be an old one you have used for many years already or a brand new unit you have just purchased. Tell him if it’s a one-way or a two-way system, the brand or the model. This way, the person you have commissioned to do the job may have the inkling of what to expect when he comes in checking your unit. Old gas furnaces may have old parts phased out in the market, but there are some professionals who can at least tell you where to get a surplus of old parts. New gas furnaces, meanwhile, may be a new experience for the technician, so it is best that you relay these information before hiring him.
