A Large or Small Gas Furnace?

Making a decision on buying a gas furnace is a big one. It is an investment in your home, not just for now but for the future as well. To that end you need to be confident in what you are buying, that the furnace is the right one for you. And one of the biggest questions is – should you get a large or small gas furnace?

And that is a fair question. The size of the furnace makes a big difference to the efficiency of your heating, your heating bills, your repair costs and far more. So let us take a look at what you should be considering when you are deciding on what size furnace to invest in.

Large vs Small Gas Furnace

The first thing to consider is probably the most important… will the furnace be sufficient to your needs? A large furnace is able to heat up far more by way of heating and water, meaning that you are unlikely to go cold. By contrast too small a furnace and you will get through what it has heated quickly and you will need to be heating more – leading to cold periods.

But it is not as simple as large = better. If you have too large a gas furnace then you open yourself up to far more by way of bills. The heating and fuel bills will be larger because you are heating up more, potentially too much for your needs, meaning you are simply throwing money away.

Repair bills for both can rise depending on how you use it. A small gas furnace may need to be used more and so will use parts up quicker. But a large gas furnace may end up losing heat before you have even used it – and so need heating up again, also increasing repair bills.

A small gas furnace can be the right size for your home, what is important is assessing your needs and that of your home’s.
